Mostarda is a sweet, pungent Italian fruit and mustard condiment based on the peasant tradition of preserving fruits and vegetables for the winter. The ingredients vary regionally, and in northern Italy, the traditional recipe involves fruit or vegetables, sugar and essential oil of mustard. This fruit mustard from Corte Donda is made of large pieces of orange, cherry, clementine and kiwi simmered in a clear, sweet syrup spiced with mustard essential oil for piquant flavor. Owners Claudio and Anna Rizzi pride themselves in working with the greatest care and attention to detail, so all of the fruit is hand cut and processed.
Mixed Fruit Mostarda is a perfect accompaniment for Thanksgiving turkeys, holiday roasts and any other roasted meats, adding a splash of color and bright flavor to the meal. You can also serve it with strong cheese atop crostini as an appetizer, or top slices of cheesecake to give your palate a little punch at the end of the meal. For something a little different, use this mixed fruit mustard as a chutney for a sumptuous Indian feast of curries and naan.
In Mantua, home of Corte Donda, this unique fruit mustard is also an essential ingredient in the filling for the typical pumpkin tortelli pasta. Claudio recommends that you open the mostarda at least 15 minutes before using in order to soften its kick!
About the Producer: Located near Mantova on the bank of the mighty river Po, the Corte Donda country house dates back to the 18th century. It has been meticulously renovated over the years in every single detail and is now a very cozy agriturismo (farm bed and breakfast) including a small restaurant that offers some of the best examples of Mantuan cuisine made with the farm’s products. In addition to the charming farmhouse, the Corte Donda property extends into farmland, where Claudio and Anna Rizzi grow grapes for winemaking, plus fruit and vegetables to make jams, sauces and the pickled fruits commonly called mostarde.
