Crushed Brown Sugar from Hateruma Island, Japan
This textured brown sugar is sweet with earthy mineral tones and notes of tobacco. Brown sugar from the tropical Okinawan archipelago—especially the island of Hateruma—is prized in Japanese cooking for its deep and intense flavor.
Please note: due to this sugar being much less processed than standard white sugar, it is not fully granulated. Ingredients: cane sugar. Store at room temperature, away from direct sunlight.
How to use
In addition to sweetening desserts and tea, Okinawan Brown Sugar can also bring balance to bitter, salty or sour dishes. Whisk with sesame oil, Organic Soy Sauce and Pure Rice Vinegar for a quick marinade, mix with your favorite herbs and spices to rub over chicken or ribs before grilling or add a pinch to round out a saucy braise.
